Free Software
Here’s a list of some free programs and tools for your computer that I find useful.

  • 7-Zip (by Igor Pavlov) – Allows you to view and create compressed files and archives.
  • Audacity (by The Audacity Team) – An open source sound editor and recorder program.
  • Autoruns (by Sysinternals) – Allows you to manage programs that run at startup, Internet Explorer add-ons, codecs, etc.
  • Belarc Advisor (by Belarc) – Creates a HTML report about your computer, displaying installed hardware, installed software, installed Windows updates and product keys for certain software.
  • CDBurnerXP (by Canneverbe Limited) – A CD/DVD recording suite that allows you to compile your own data and audio discs.
  • Classic Shell (by Ivo Beltchev) – Reinstalls the classic Start Menu on Windows 8/8.1/10.
  • CPU-Z (by CPUID) – Displays information about your processor and motherboard componets.
  • Eusing Free Registry Cleaner (by Eusing Software) – Scans for and removes invalid entries in the Windows Registry.
  • Floppy Image (by Anders Rundegren) – Create and write floppy disk images with this simple portable program. (Note: Link downloads v1.5.2, the latest free version of this program).
  • Google Earth (by Google) – View satellite imagery, get directions and find places with Google Earth.
  • HD Tune (by EFD Software) – Benchmark, scan for errors & view information about your hard drive(s) with this utility.
  • Intel Processor ID Utility (by Intel) – Detects the installed Intel processor in your computer and displays information about that processor.
  • ISO Recorder (by Alex Feinman) – A program that integrates itself into Windows Explorer, allowing you to create ISO images from folders and burn ISO images to discs.
  • Keyfinder (by Magical Jelly Bean)- Allows you to retrieve product keys from installed software on your computer.
  • Microsoft Mathematics (by Microsoft) – Create graphs and solve equations with this program. Similar to a graphing calculator.
  • Microsoft Security Essentials (by Microsoft) – Free anti-virus software For Windows 7.  (Vista & XP versions without the nags and end-of-support disablement can be downloaded here: 32-bit / 64-bit)
  • MiniTool Partition Wizard Boot CD (by MiniTool) – Allows you to manage and re-partition your hard drives outside of the OS. (Note: Downloads version 9.1 from the Internet Archive as later versions of the boot CD are no longer offered for free).
  • Mozilla Firefox (by Mozilla) – Web browser for your computer. Often used as a replacement for Internet Explorer.
  • Norton Removal Tool (by Symantec) – Removes all traces of Norton products installed on your computer.
  • OpenOffice.org (by Apache) – An office productivity suite similar to Microsoft Office that is completely free.
  • Speccy (by Piriform) – A small program that displays lots of technical information about the hardware inside your computer.
  • TweakUI for Windows XP (by Microsoft) – Allows you to customize and change settings that you normally wouldn’t be able to change through the Windows GUI.
  • Ultimate Webshots Converter (by Hervé BRY/Setaou) – Export photos from your Webshots collections.
  • VSO Inspector (by VSO Software) – Scan your CD’s & DVD’s for read errors. (Note: Version info listed on the site is incorrect. There is actually a unlisted newer version available that can be downloaded here).
  • WinAmp (by Nullsoft) – Playbacks a wide selection of audio file formats.
  • Windows Live Essentials (by Microsoft) – A suite of programs offering instant messaging, photo editing/organization, movie editing, and e-mail management. (Use links in this post to download).
  • Zune Desktop Theme for Windows XP (by Microsoft) – A theme (being an updated version of Royale Nior) released with the launch of the Zune player.

Trial Software
Here’s a list of some useful programs that you can try first, then buy if you want to continue using them.

  • Acoustica MP3 Audio Mixer (by Acoustica) – Easily edit and mix audio files or record audio from a mic or line in input.
  • FontCreator (by High-Logic) – Create your own fonts with this program.
  • inSSIDer (by MetaGeek) – Displays infomation about the wireless access points in your neighborhood. Note: This program was free until version 4. Download the latest free version (3.0.7.48) from the Internet Archive.
  • WinZip (by WinZip Computing) – Allows you to view and create compressed files and archives.
