In Windows XP, if you want a solid color behind your icon labels on the desktop, or you want to turn the solid color off, follow these steps.

  1. Right-click on My Computer and select properties.
  2. Click the advanced tab.
  3. In the performance section, click settings.
  4. Under the visual effects tab, check/uncheck the “use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop” option in the list.
  5. Close the performance options and system properties windows by clicking OK.

If you checked the “use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop” and the solid color still remains behind the icon labels, you may have to disable the “lock web items on desktop” option.

  1. Right-click on the desktop and point to arrange icons by.
  2. In the sub menu, check on “lock web items on desktop” to remove the check mark.

Tip: Disable “lock web items on desktop” if the desktop quickly changes to and from a solid background while using or starting Windows.
