Musical Colors is a collection of visualizations designed for Windows Media Player. The visualizations first appeared in Windows Media Player 7 and then later disappeared starting with the release of Windows Media Player 9. Over time, people enjoyed the Musical Colors theme and upon buying a new computer, discovered that it wasn’t there anymore. The following explains some tips and info about the Musical Colors visualizations as well as instructions for installment on computers that don’t contain the Musical Colors visualizations.
Compatibility
Musical Colors works on Windows Media Player version 7 and above including version 11 & 12. Musical Colors also works with Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10. The only issue is that full screen viewing on a widescreen monitor will cause the visualizations to be shifted to the left of the screen with a thick black bar to the right. This is because Musical Colors is not widescreen capable.
Musical Colors Versions
There are two different versions of the Musical Colors visualizations. They are:
- Version 7.0.0.1440 (Windows Media 7 / Windows Me)
- Version 8.0.0.4477 (Windows Media 8 / Windows XP)
The main difference between the two versions is that 7.0.0.1440 contains a visualization called “WinMe 3D”, since that version was bundled with Windows Me. 8.0.0.4477 was bundled with Windows XP, and the WinMe 3D visualization was replaced with a similar visual named “Ice Crystals”. WinMe 3D displays colors of blue, light blue, green, yellow, and orange. Ice Crystals display shades of light blue.
Another difference between the two versions is when you pause Windows Media Player, version 7.0.0.1440 of Musical Colors continues to display the visualizations with continuous movement. Version 8.0.0.4477 of Musical Colors will cut to black when paused, hiding the visualizations.
Locating The Musical Colors File
First you have to decide which version of Musical Colors you want. (See Musical Colors Versions above). Musical Colors are located inside a file called wmpvis.dll. The best way to locate the file is to copy it off of a computer that already has it installed or off of a Windows installation CD.
For Musical Colors version 7.0.0.1440
Use a computer running Windows Me with Windows Media Player 7 installed. The wmpvis.dll file can be found under the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player directory. You can also retrieve the file off of the Windows Me installation CD by going to the cabinet file <CD drive>\win9x\WIN_16.CAB and extracting the wmpvis.dll file.
For Musical Colors version 8.0.0.4477
Use a computer that was originally installed with Windows Media Player 8 and with Windows XP service pack 1 or earlier. Locate the wmpvis.dll file under the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player directory. You can also retrieve the file off of a Windows XP installation CD containing service pack 1 or earlier by going to <CD drive>\I386 and locating WMPVIS.DL_. Copy the file to your desktop. Open your Command Prompt and type: cd desktop and press enter. Then type expand wmpvis.dl_ wmpvis.dll and press enter. This will expand and decompress the file to make it usable.
Installation
For 32-bit versions of Windows, copy wmpvis.dll to the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player folder. For 64-bit versions of Windows, copy wmpvis.dll to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player folder.
Note: If you copy/paste the command lines below, you will have to retype the quotes so they are ‘straight’. Smart quotes will cause the command to fail. I keep putting straight quotes in, but WordPress reverts them back to smart quotes at some point!
For Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1/10 32-Bit
On the desktop, bring up the run dialog box by holding down WinKey+R. Type or copy/paste the following line including the quotes.
Regsvr32 “C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll”
For Windows Vista/7 64-Bit
- Open the Start Menu and type cmd (Command Prompt) in the search box.
- In the search results, right-click on cmd and select Run as Administrator.
- In the Command Prompt, type cd \windows\syswow64 and hit enter.
- Then type Regsvr32 “C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll”
For Windows 8/8.1/10 64-Bit
- On the desktop, right-click on the start button (extreme left side of the taskbar for Windows 8) and select Command Prompt (Admin).
- In the Command Prompt, type cd \windows\syswow64 and hit enter.
- Then type Regsvr32 “C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll”
Click OK or press enter, A dialog box appears with the following text; “DllRegisterServer in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll succeeded.” Click OK. Open Windows Media Player and check your visualizations. Musical Colors should now be listed.
If you are using 32-bit Windows Vista/7/8/8.1/10 and you encounter an error message after clicking OK in the Run dialog box, try using the Command Prompt, making sure it’s running with administrator privileges.
Names of the Visualizations
In the Musical Colors menu, you will see the following names. Click on a name to see a picture of the visualization.
- Night Lights
- Colors in Motion
- Aurora
- Rhythmic Colors
- Star Power
- Electric Green
- Soft Fire
- Silky Wave
- CutOut
- Rolling Fire
- Water Spray
- Acid Rock
- Hard Rock
- Hot Spray
- Yellow Swirl
- Blue Flame
- Critter Rock
- Electric Rainbow
- Neon Highway
- WinMe 3D (version 7.0.0.1440 only)
- Ice Crystals (version 8.0.0.4477 only)
Lost Musical Colors Visualizations
You may have heard about a theme for Windows XP named “Royale Noir” that was cancelled or removed during development, then was leaked to the public and became popular. One day I opened the wmpvis.dll inside Notepad just to look around. After scrolling though garbled unreadable information, I found the names of each visualization near the bottom of the file. What I then found were several names that didn’t appear on the Musical Colors menu inside Windows Media Player.
- Stalactite
- Rolling Colors*
- Wild Rock
- Red Rock
- Color Cave
- Lighting
- Untitled – (Labeled as “Work in Progress”)
- Colors in Motion in Progress – (Early version of “Colors in Motion”?)
These missing visualizations are listed in both versions of Musical Colors. These visualizations were probably intended to be included with the rest of the Musical Colors visualizations, but were probably removed because they were not finished or had issues. I am not sure if these visualizations themselves exist in he wmpvis.dll file. What’s interesting is that in version 7.0.0.1440, “Ice Crystals” appears inside the wmpvis.dll file but is not listed in Windows Media Player. “WinMe 3D” also appears in version 8.0.0.4477 and is not listed in Windows Media Player. This makes me think that the missing visualizations possibly exist in the wmpvis.dll file, but are turned off or ignored so that Windows Media Player does not list them. After various searches on the Internet, I did not find anything about these missing visuals.
Update 8/6/2023: Special thanks to bluedragon-cairo for enabling these missing visualizations. The modified wmpvis.dll can be downloaded here. (Korean version here). WARNING: Selecting the “Work in Progress” visualization will cause Windows Media Player to behave erratically, and may crash the program. Restarting Windows Media Player should clear up any issues caused by this preset if it’s accidentally selected.
This is an excellent post and may be one to be followed up to see what are the results
A chum e-mailed this link the other day and I will be desperately waiting your next page. Proceed on the terrific work.
Came across your web site via live search the other day and absolutely think its great. Continue the truly great work.
Thank You So Much For Info On How To Get Colours In Motion Back On A Later Model PC I Am In My 70’s And Not That Flash With My PC Skills I Downloaded The WMPVIS File From The Net And Your Instructions Made The Rest Easy For Me Thank You Once Again
You’re welcome.
unfortunatly, when i tried to get it… a error message came back saying:
“The module “”C;\Program” failed to load.
“Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or
“debug it to check for problems with the binary or
“dependent .DLL files.
“The specified module could not be found.”
and you know what it was… it was because you put “Smart quotes” instead of “Straight quotes”
either way… just letting you know and I will end saying THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fixed. Thank you for bringing this to my attention!
Most of my posts are typed in Microsoft Word first, then copyed and pasted over to my blog. Word automatically puts the smart quotes in, although I thought the quotes would revert back to stright quotes when pasted in the run command.
well yes i use microsoft word too… but i did notice that when i posted this message, i had put both smart quotes and streight quotes (which i put on them respectivly) were changed to ‘smart’ quotes and i might have something to do with windows7… either way, i got it to work and i can’t thank you enough telling us how to do this!!!
Thanks so much. Star Power is my fave and I’ve been missing it for a while. Now I can get it back. Hurray!!!
I’m using the Windows 7 64 bit OS, & Windows Media Player 12. I’ve followed your instructions about downloading & installing the wmpvis.dll & I keep getting the error message “The module “C:\Program files\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll” was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80020009. I can’t seem to find out how to solve it by looking for the error code. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Try this…
type: cmd in the start menu search box
right-click on cmd in the search results and select run as administrator
type: cd \windows\syswow64 and hit enter
type: Regsvr32 “C:\Program files\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll” and hit enter
thank you very much, very well written article, found it through a random yahoo search and i shared it on my twitter!
amazing, nice topic
Very useful info. Hope to see more posts soon!
Thank You so much, I was looking for this everywhere. A bit of info though. I have Win 7 64 and to get the DLL to register I had to use the system32 directory not, syswow64. It is working with WMP 12.
I have been looking for info on this program! Thank you so much for sharing this.
It’s funny, when I did the search this evening on musical colors visualization, a post of mine from 2005 looking for it in the windows boards came up.
-This- is the info I was looking for!
I looked for this forever ! I’m so bummed I haven’t been able to get it to work yet…running Windows 7/ WMP 12… downloaded the wmpvis.dll to desktop.
I got the file on desktop to expand but it stated there was no specified path. I exited. Then followed the directions to a “T” for windows 7 64. I’m running the cmd as administrator. Also tried to place it in the system 32 directory – as mentioned by another person who commented.
I’m so baffled – I know enough computer stuff to get me into trouble, but not necessarily enough to get me out. Any suggestions, I really missed these visualizations. Please help.
Nevermind…I got it !
Nice post. I was checking continuously this blog and I am impressed! Extremely helpful info particularly the last part 🙂 I care for such info a lot. I was looking for this certain info for a long time. Thank you and good luck.
Night Lights is my personal fav. Using it in WMP 12 on W7 x64. Would be a whole lot easier had MS still made this available by exe installation. Still saying that it would be nice to still be able to run 16 bit software now and then, some old games, etc, without using third party software to make them run. I will not be upgrading to the silly W8 unless I can completely disable the mobile Metro UI. But this works great! If others find it difficult to get rid of smart quotes, just open Notepad and retype your quotes in again. Otherwise you may have to reconfigure Word.
It is possible to to make your own .EXE file for Musical Colors that works the same way as the visualizations found on Microsoft’s website. You will need to download a visualization such as BlazingColors and extract the contents from it. Change the filenames in the .INF file from (originalvis.dll) to wmpvis.dll and save it as wmpvis.inf. Then use the iexpress wizard (type iexpress in the run box) and create a self extracting package that will run an installation command. Add the three original .DLL files that were extracted from the downloaded visualization plus wmpvis.dll and wmpvis.inf. In the install program drop down box, select wmpvis.inf. When done, run the .EXE that you created to install Musical Colors!
i typed it every witch way and it says failed to load can anyone help? i run on 64 bit windows 7 home premium.
What kind of error message are you getting? Did you follow the directions for Vista/7 64-bit? As someone mentioned above, try replacing syswow64 with system32.
the module “C:\Program files\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll” failed to load
make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for
problems with the binary or dependent .dll fillels
the specified module could not be found.
i have the file in the system 32 folder
The WMPVIS.DLL file should be located in the c:\program files\windows media player directory. Move WMPVIS.DLL to that directory and then try again using the original installation procedure for Vista/7 64 bit.
thanks it works now i like how you help people install it who have problems.
Important to remember is when using Windows 7 x64 you have both 86 and 64 directories.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player
C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player
Regsvr32 “C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll”
Regsvr32 “C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll”
This time around (new windows installation) I chose to reg both directories but I reg. just the one last time and it worked for me.
I promise you it works if you follow directions from contour07, 😛
Thanks for the instructions to make an exe. Not given that a go yet. 🙂
I’m running Windows 7 Pro x64 and have followed your directions but get the same error message that “al” got . I checked the Program Files and wmpvis.dll is already there in Windows Media Player. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions as I really miss my Critter Rock…the new visualizations stink.
windows 7) place WMPVIS.DLL in system32 folder. run cmd as admin , no need to change anything in cmd , copy and past in cmd( regsvr32 “C:\Program files\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll”) hit enter then ok finish
Thank you a lot!! I missed so much certain visualizations that disappeared during actualizations.
Note: I found the file in a russian web XD
Excellent article!
However, when I try to do the ‘expand wmpvis.dl_ wmpvis.dll’ I get the following message:
“Can’t open input file wmpvis.dl_”
Any suggestions?
I think I figured it out. The instruction ‘expand…’ only applies if you acquire the wmpvis.dl_ file from the installation CD, I believe?
Yes
Got it to work! Thank you very much! [:-)
I am so thrilled!!! With all the notes above I thought I would never be able to figure out how to get the colors in motion back in the media player on my windows 7 computer. These are the steps I used:
1. I copied the wmpvis.dll file into the c:Program Files\Windows Media Player
(be sure not to use the c:Program Files (x86) folder)
2. Went to the Start button and opened a cmd window (as administratr) and on the command line I typed the following (just as he says above) don’t copy it, but type it yourself to get the right quotation marks:
Regsvr32 “C:\Program files\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll”
It will give you a message back that said it was successful. That’s all you will do in the cmd window.
3. Then I opened my Windows Media Player, started playing a song, and clicked on the bottom right icon to switch to the “Playing Now” mode. Right click on whatever visual is playing and you will see a window with a scroll down list that includes “Visualizations”
4. Select “Musical Colors” and it will have a right pointing arrow that you can click on and see all the new options including “Colors in Motion” Seclect it and Shazamm – you will see the amazing restoration of the colors in motion!!!
I love this site – everyone has such good information and lots of help.
Brian you are a genius! Thanks so much!!
I’m using Windows Media Player 12 under Windows Blue (8.1) and this worked perfectly! I can not thank you enough for helping me get this back, I haven’t seen this visualization since I used Windows ME. I appreciate it, buddy.
I’ve been trying to add Musical Colors to my Windows 7 Laptop for awhile now, I follow all the steps but when hitting enter I get a Regsvr32 message that reads..The module “C:\Program” failed to load, Make sure the binary is stored at the specified Path and so on. Then it has…The specified module could not be found.. Here’s exactly what I’ve entered.. (Regsvr32 “C:\Program files\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll”}.. I don’t know if there’s any spaces or not when typing but however it’s entered its always not correct. I succeeded in getting it entered correctly a few years back and was tickled pink to have my MC back. Now I don’t know what’s wrong, I need to know Exactly what to enter and how to enter this in the CMD so I can enjoy Musical Colors again. Someone Please Help!
Are you copying and pasting the command? If so, you need to retype the quotes so they are straight as “smart quotes” causes Regsvr32 to fail. beirirangu pointed this out in the comments.
Hi
I don’t have any kind word processing software programs installed on my PC! I’ve been using Word Pad hoping it works just as well when I copy and paste. I don’t know if I need to hit the space bar before entering the following line either way Regsvr32 “C:\Program files\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll”. I’ve tried copy and paste, spacing before typing and not spacing, The following is how I’ve entered the command line none of them succeeded.. cd \windows\syswow64 Regsvr32 “C:\Program files\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll” (this was tried with and without the”quotation marks”) Please let me know exactly how it should be entered so I can finally get it entered correctly!
Make sure you retype the quotes so that they are “straight”. Smart quotes will cause the command to fail.
As for the command prompt, are you right-clicking on the program and selecting Runs as administrator?
I would like to know exactly how to change the “Smart quotes” to Straight! I have a problem understanding how to enter the command Regsvr32 “C:\Program files\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll”, I use WordPad and AbiWord instead of Microsoft Word on my PC’s. I do apologize for my lack of following directions!
Just simply retype the quotes after you copied the command in the run window. No need to use Wordpad or MS Word.
I get the below error message after following the instructions for installation to a 64-bit system. I run Windows 7 64-bit and use Media Player 12.
The module “C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll” may not compatible with the version of Windows that you’re running. Check if the module is compatible with an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of regsvr32.exe.
Heya superb website! Does running a blog like this take a lot
of work? I’ve absolutely no expertise in coding but I was hoping to start my own blog in the near future.
Anyway, should you have any ideas or tips for new blog
owners please share. I know this is off subject however I simply had to ask.
Thanks a lot!
WordPress offers two editing modes; simple formatting and HTML coding. Most of the time you can pre-type something in MS Word and then copy/paste it to WordPress when you’re ready.
I finally got It The problem was that I failed to type cd \windows\syswow64 and hit enter before typing the command as shown! Regsvr32 “C:\Program files\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll” Im dancing Now and I’m sorry for all the fuss I made on this Blog
Thank you – your instructions were the easiest to follow and the only ones that allowed me to successfully install the visualization! There were several others that I looked at that had missing steps and said to install elsewhere. I did it this time on the first try.
Hi – great site…but….it is now 2016 and I have Windows 10. I am using WMP12 and I am trying (desperately) to get the Musical colors visualization to work on the system. Windows 10 will not allow this…I get as far as the command prompt insertion of Regsvr32 etc (hoping that this will work) and I get the the module “C:\Program files\Windows Media Player\wmpvis.dll” failed to load
make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for
problems with the binary or dependent .dll fillels
the specified module could not be found.
Can anybody help me with this with up to date instructions – No offence to you Brian – just that time moves on (as does Windows – leaving some of the good bits behind.)
I’ll look into this. I have a computer running Windows 10, but for some reason I haven’t yet tried putting the Musical Colors visualizations on.
Most likely you are running 64 bit Windows. Did you follow 64 bit registration instructions?
EDIT: My computer with Windows 10 had no issues with registering the wmpvis.dll file. Based on your error, it appears that you’re trying to run regsvr32 without administrator privileges.
Hi,
I am using Windows 10 Home
System 32-bit Operating System, x 64- based processor
Am running (or trying to run) regsvr32 as Administrator.
———
Sorry Contour07, windows 10 does not show Program Files (x86) folder. Would you care to describe how to locate it, please? The steps I followed are:
1. 2xL click This PC on desktop
2. 2xL click c: drive
3. 2xL click Program Files
4. Scroll through to Windows Media Player folder and open.
You shouldn’t have to run regsvr32 with administrator privileges. It should register without them.
There is no Program Files (x86) folder under 32-bit versions of Windows. Place the wmpvis.dll file in the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player directory and follow the installation instructions for 32-bit Windows.
OK, I found a problem with my instructions. (Can’t believe this error has gone unnoticed for so long).
Assuming you have 64 bit Windows, place the wmpvis.dll file in the Windows Media Player folder located in the Program Files (x86) folder, not the Program Files folder. Follow the instructions for registering the file for 64 bit Windows, but make sure the Program Files directory has (x86) after it.
I will update this page shortly.
Eureka!
I have done it!
**Hint to those not blessed in IT….Read the instructions and don’t EXPECT it to be in tech talk.
Simple little matter of actually reading the guidelines so diligently supplied by Contour07.
Thank you, now enjoying the pleasing glow of Soft Fire (after many years without Fire).
I am still having problems putting the electric-rainbow on my media player i have Window 10 is there a way to do that plz help me
Did you follow the instructions for locating and installing the wmpvis.dll file?
Thanks for the information, but the download links are missing… If you have this 2 versions, could you upload them in MediaFire.
I didn’t list the download links to the wmpvis.dll files as system files are usually hosted by suspicious sites or sites that require an account. The best way to get a hold of these files is to extract them from the appropriate Windows installation discs described in this post. Alternately, you can extract wmpvis.dll from a standalone Windows Media Player 7 setup file.
Thanks. I remember seeing Colors In Motion in PC store back in like 2004 and now I felt like something is missing in WMP because I kept clicking through all these swamp-colored visualizations and couldn’t find the one I remember.
Thank you very much. So nostalgic. ^____^ I got the wmpvis.dll from another site, but your guide is helpful for me on where to put it!
Generally I don’t leazrn article on blogs, however I
wish to say that this write-up very forced me to take a look aat and do
so! Your writing taste has been amazed me. Thankk you, very great article.
Great article, worked just fine for me.
Would you happen to know which .dll points to the Particle set of visualizations? From what I can tell, while they were removed from WMP11, they should still work fine on WMP12.
It appears that the Particle visualizations (along with a few others that were removed starting with WMP 11) are stored in wmploc.dll located in the Windows/System32 directory. However, wmploc.dll is version specific as it contains the underlying operation of the player, so registering or replacing it with 11 or 12 installed will most likely break the program among other things. I highly recommend that you don’t register or replace the DLL with anything other than the version of WMP that it was designed for, unless you have a spare computer for testing purposes that you can reinstall Windows on.
That’s a shame, my previous comment was based on a dodgy Youtube video where the creator claimed he was able to get all of the removed visualizations working on WMP12 by mixing together wmpviz dlls from various older versions of WMP.
Thanks for the quick response.
Me and my girlfriend Lizzy really enjoyed the Particle visualization when we were third graders back in 2008 using WMP10 on Windows XP, and when both of us upgraded to Windows 7 (WMP12) in fourth grade, we were disappointed to find that it, Ambience, Plenoptic, and Spikes had all been removed. Anyways, looking at the Windows Media Player Visualization wiki, getting the Ambience, Particle, Plenoptic, and Spikes visualizations back on Windows Media Player requires the wmpui.dll file from Windows Media Player 8. You can download WMP8 from oldversion.com, extract the contents to a folder with 7zip, and after moving the wmpui.dll file to the Windows Media Player folder, register it with command prompt using the same instructions given in this blog for wmpvis.dll. Using the wmp.dll or wmpui.dll files from WMP9 or WMP10 will break Windows Media Player (it is also worth noting that WMP8 and below do not have a wmp.dll file).
Contour07, I hope this works. If so, this might warrant a blog post on how to get these four old visualizations (Ambience, Particle, Plenoptic, Spikes) back on Windows Media Player.
Unfortunately, there is no way to install those visualizations without breaking WMP 11 or 12, unless there’s a modified dll file exclusively containing the visualizations and nothing else. Also note that Microsoft never released an official stand-alone installer of Windows Media Player 8, so what you’re seeing on oldversion.com is likely an unofficial installer of WMP 8 modified to run on Windows 98/Me/2000.
Just want to sayh thanks! I loved the Ice Crystals visualization for reasons that are half nostalgia, half some inexplicable part of my lizard-brain that finds them beautiful. Thank you for posting such excellent and clear advice to get it working again.
I use the Ice Crystals visualization a lot because its basically acts as a frequency analyzer.
Hi
I’m trying to add Musical Colors to my Windows 10 64 bit Laptop and don’t quite understand how to do it, the last time I did this was on my win 7 in 2014.
Can someone give me step by step Instructions on exactly how to proceed on what to do and what to Type, Windows 10 is a little different then my previous version and I’m not familiar with the Command prompt operation either I’ve got the wmpvis.dll already on my desktop, I just can’t get it to succeed in being added, showing up, or working.
I tried but got a Regsvr32 0x80020009 Error
Thanks in Advance
You mentioned that the wmpvis.dll file is on your desktop. You’ll need to move it to the c:\program files (x86)\windows media player directory in order for it to successfully register.
Hi
I did as Stated by opening up media player in (x86) and moving it to the area, nothing has changed and I don’t see Musical Colors in the players visualizations list at all.
TIA
Did you use the regsvr32 command as documented to register wmpvis.dll? Simply placing it in the Windows Media Player folder will do nothing.
HI
Just wanted to make sure that the 8.0.0.4477 version is for Windows 10 64 bit which is what I have.
Either version of wmpvis.dll (v7 or v8) will work.
Hi
I still haven’t got this on my Computer the first time I had no problem adding it which was 10 yrs ago on a different version of windows since then I’ve had 3 light strokes so my memory is a little affected the 8.0.0.4477 File is in the win 86 MP location, but its not showing up in my visualiations Please let me know exactly how, what, and where to add the DLL for it to work correctly as I very much want Musical Colors added to Windows 10!
TIA
have you tried it in syswow64, and running regsvr32 wmpvis.dll from there?
I successfully enabled those “lost” visualizations on XP. used a debugger and changed the number of visualizations from 20 to 29. However t may crash if you select “Work In Progress”

That’s awesome! Can you share the modified wmpvis.dll or provide steps to manually edit and enable these visualizations?

Debugger screenshot changing two constants to modify the number of visualizations in Musical Colors:
It also has both WinME 3D and Ice crystals.
Rolling colors is the same as the one in Electric Colors from WMP7 Bonus Pack.
Don’t select “Work In progress”, not always but sometimes it may break the whole visualizations functionality until you restart Windows Media Player.
I also tried to enable those visualizations in 7.0.0 version too, but it became slightly buggy. WinMe 3D will just show black screen, and Colors in Motion in Progress will show a color glitched/broken WinMe 3D visualization. I think it’s my mistake while modifying the assembly – I did the same thing when enabling those in 8.0.0 version… Ice Crystal works fine though.
WMP 7.0 version (actually English as it isn’t localised): https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/912975434822615072/1138439225977610340/wmpvis-1.dll
WMP 7.1 version (Korean): https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/912975434822615072/1138440921525014659/wmpvis-2.dll
Both are broken with WinMe 3D and Colors in Motion in Progress visualization.
could you also send a file with “work in progress” preset disabled?
Something interesting is that WMP 7.x’s musical colors didn’t break the program when selecting “Work in Progress”(in the Korean version it’s labeled as “작업 중”). Also the different thing is that in 8.0.0 version of wmpvis.dll, that visualization just displays a solid color but in 7.0.0 version, with a solid background it has a thin color gradient bar at the right side.
Download link is not working
